Common Cat Diseases - Information for First Owners

The first thing any new pet owner must know is that cats may not always show signs indicating that they are sick, until it is too late. It seems that this is a consequence of the fact that felines are natural predators and showing signs of weakness can transform them into preys.
However, spending a lot of time with your cat and observing her regular behavior will definitely help you feel when something is not quite right, even when there are no external signs. We always insist that pet owners must be responsible persons that adopt animals only if they afford spending time and also money on them. A cat needs a nutritionally balanced diet, litter and a litter box, different objects for her daily care and entertainment and, of course, veterinary care.
Common diseases
• Obesity
Indoor cats often lack the possibility to do things that they naturally do, like climbing or running more. This is why it is important to control her diet and regularly check on her weight. Provide her proper food, nutritionally balanced, and ask for professional advice from your vet, anytime you need it.
• Vomiting and diarrhea – are symptoms typically caused by common digestive issues however they must not be overlooked, as they can aggravate and lead to dehydration and other concerns. Typical treatment includes an increase of the fluid intake and only solid food. Rarely, these symptoms may indicate serious illnesses, so if they persist more than a day, they must be investigated by a vet.
• Fractures
There are popular beliefs that cats can fall without getting injured, but this is not true. Even short falls may produce them injuries when their body does not have enough time to adjust in order to land properly. Longer falls may cause fractures and even death. Cats have an extraordinary sense of equilibrium however they must not be left exposed to the danger of falling down. If a fracture occurs, take your cat immediately to a vet.
• Dental problems
These issues are causes of concern when they affect your cat`s chewing practices and may also indicate gingivitis or digestive problems. Signs that should be investigated include bad breath, red or discolored gums, loose teeth and more. Cat owners should have their pet`s teeth brushed and, alternatively, buy chew toys that prevent tartar.
• Fleas
This is a very unpleasant disease, but quite common to cats, as their fur attracts them. The typical symptoms are scratching and, sometimes, bald patches. You must consult your vet that will use the right solutions to get rid of them. Never use insecticide on your cat!
Life-threatening diseases

Unfortunately, your furry friend is not at all immune to life threatening diseases. A cat can get diabetes, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, Feline Leukemia, Heartworm spread by infected mosquitoes, urinary diseases, respiratory infections and various types of cancer.
Every cat parent must learn to recognize signs and symptoms of different diseases in order to seek for veterinary help before the cat's condition gets worse.
