The idea of having a cat is something that comes up in many people’s head, but the idea of their homes smelling like cat urine makes them give up the first idea.

This does not need to be the case. Having a cat is not equal to having a smelly home, as long as you take care of your fur ball properly and give her a good potty training.

Cats usually learn fast where they should go to the toilet, so, if they start peeing somewhere else than where they were supposed to go means that there is a problem.

First things first, you need to eliminate a medical cause. Your cat might have some bladder issues that prevent her from getting to the litter on time. Take her to the vet as soon as possible, in order to have her checked and diagnosed.

If you eliminate the medical cause, it might be that she does not enjoy her litter anymore. Just like you do not like to go to a dirty toilet, especially when you have an emergency, your cat does not like it either. If the litter is dirty, if it smells funny, if it has too many wet spots or too much poop, so the cat prefers to go somewhere else in the house where she finds it more comfortable.

In the unfortunate case when she has already done it, she peed on the carpet, or on the sofa, it is too late for preventing. Now you need to act.

The first thing you need to do when you see the spot on the carpet is to try and remove as much urine as possible by using paper towels, in case it is still wet. Once the towel does not get any more yellow stains on it, it means you have soaked all the urine in the carpet.

The next step is to use enzymatic cleaners for the carpet. Try to use these first, before other cleaners, as afterwards they might not work anymore. The enzymes that they contain speed up the biodegradation of the organic substances like urine. Follow the instructions on the bottle.

In case this solution did not do the job properly, you can try and use a half water half vinegar mix. Use a brush to saturate the whole area. The vinegar neutralizes the smell in the cat urine.

Grab some paper towels again and dry the area from the vinegar solution. After taking out as much of the excess liquid with the paper towels, let it dry by itself.

If you want to give a nice scent to the area, you can use baking soda. It is a good cleaner and deodorant.

After going through this process once, you will realize that you do not want to do it again, so try to retrain your cat, clean the litter box more often, and think about spaying or neutering the little one. A neutered cat will not try to mark his territory and thus will might make your life a little easier.
