The Havanese, also known as the Bichon Havanais, is a small breed of dog of the Bichon type. The Bichon group includes the non-sporting breeds that have curled tails and long hair. This breed is known from ancient times and had a charming role. The men were offering the Cuban ladies a dog like this to establish relationships. This little charmer became the national dog of Cuba.
The Havanese is a sturdy dog with a firm appearance. It may appear helpless and delicate, but it has a strong constitution and a solid body. The head is big and flat. The skull is rounded at the back and has the same length as the muzzle. The eyes are of medium size, round and dark. The nose is delicate with fine lines. The colour of the nose is always black with small nostrils. The ears are set high on the head and stay floppy. They are not too long and hang down on the head without touching the face. The neck is thick and short and the back is long and straight. The chest is short, slightly deep and the legs are very short. The tail is carried arched.
It has a double soft coat. The outer coat is very long – it reaches 6 to 8 inches in length – and can be straight or curly. Even if it looks as they have a lot of hair, the coat is actually very light and soft. This unique coat protects them from sunlight and lets them, in the same time, to tolerate the heat. The colours of the coat vary, they can come in any colour such as white, cream, fawn, red, brown, blue, black and gray. The coat can either have one solid colour or markings.
There are no noticeable differences between the genders. The height of the males is of 8 to 11 inches (20 to 28 cm) and the weight is of 7 to 13 pounds (3 to 6 kg).
These dogs are meant to live with people and to be companions. Therefore, they are very easy to train and are willing to please their owner. They are very sociable and very affectionate and can live with other pets. They need a gentle owner, but one who can be also strict and resist their sweet and innocent look. They are suitable for all kinds of people and families and are good watch dogs. Their alert personality can lift anybody up. They are perfect for apartments and do not need a lot of space. They do not require too many things, except for a cozy bed, various activities indoors and short walks.
The coat must be brushed two or four times per week. This dog does not shed, but, instead, the hair tends to tangle. It has no major health concerns and can live for about 14 years.
The Havanese is a sweet dog who is eager to find an affectionate owner who can offer it a cozy life.
