History: The Canadian Eskimo dog is believed to be an ancient dog that has been used by the Inuit of Canadas Arctic region for at least one thousand years as a hunting and sled dog. In the late nineteenth century, it became popular with western explorers who used Canadian Eskimo dogs on expeditions to both the North and South Poles. It has come close to extinction several times during the past one hundred years and continues to be rare.
Physical Description: The Canadian Eskimo dog is a large, powerful dog. It has a broad, wedge-shaped head with small, triangular ears that are set wide apart. The muzzle tapers and its small eyes can be of any color except blue. The heavily plumed tail is curled over the back. It is double coated and can be of any color or combination of colors.
