History: The Ainu was bred by the indigenous people of Hokkaido, the Ainu, to hunt bears and deer. Most of the dogs are now kept simply as companions. The breed was designated a natural monument by the Japanese in 1937.
Physical Description: The Ainu is a strong, medium size dog with a body that is slightly longer than it is tall. It has small, triangular, dark brow eyes; a black nose; and small erect ears. There are often black spots on the tongue. The chest is wide and deep and the tail is carried over the back. The double coat is short and thick; it comes in red, white, black, gray, sesame, or brindle.
