History: The Norwegian elkhound is believed to be an ancient breed, in existence since the Vikings. It was originally a hunter of large game, especially moose and bear. It was first brought to the UK after WW I and to the US in 1928.
Physical Description: The Norwegian elkhound is a medium-size, squarely built dog. It has a broad, wedge-shaped head with dark brown eyes; small, prick ears; and a foxy face. The tail is tightly curled over the back. It is double coated with a thick, coarse outer coat in gray, silver and black with a black saddle.
Height: 19.5 to 20.5 inches
Weight: 45 to 55 pounds
Temperament: A loyal and friendly dog, it can be independent and stubborn, too. It is bold, courageous, and alert, a good watchdog. It gets along well with older children.

Best Owner: The elkhound does best with an active individual or family in the suburbs or country.
