History: The shiba inu is the smallest and oldest of Japans native breeds. It was bred to flush birds and small game and was occasionally used to hunt wild boar. It has great cultural significance in Japan and is considered a natural monument. It came close to extinction after WWII. Most shibu inu are now kept as pets. It was first brought to the U.S. in 1954.

<b>The<i> Shiba Inu</i></b>

Physical Description: The shibu inu is a foxy, medium size, compact and well muscled dog that is slightly longer than it is tall. It has a broad head with dark, upward-slanting eyes; a black nose; and small, erect ears. It is double coated with a dense outer coat in red, sesame, or black with tan points. The undercoat is cream, buff, or gray.

Height: 13.5 to 16.5 inches

Weight: 15 to 25 pounds

Temperament: The shibu inu is an alert, curious, intelligent dog with a lively, fun loving personality. It is independent and known to wander.

Activity Level: Moderate

Best Owner: This breed does well with an active owner in a city, suburban, or rural home.

Special Needs: Fenced yard, leashed, socialization, training

Possible Health Concerns: Eye problems, heart problems, hip dysplasia, luxating patellas
