History: The English springer spaniel is the largest of the land spaniels and is closely related to the cocker spaniel. It was bred to find, flush and retrieve game. The springer was recognized as a distinct breed in Britain in 1902. The breed was first imported to the U.S. in the 1920s and it continues to be used as a hunter, as well as a companion.
Physical Description: This is a medium-size, muscular, and compact dog with long drop ears; dark, oval eyes; a liver or black nose; and a long, broad head. The medium length tail is carried horizontally. The medium length flat or wavy coat is feathered on the ears, chest, legs and belly. It may be liver or white; black and white; blue or liver roan; or trip-color, black and white or liver and white with tan markings. The springer has freckles on the muzzle and legs.

Temperament: This is an outgoing and energetic dog that is hard working and enthusiastic. It is easygoing and friendly and affectionate with its family. It may be too exuberant for young children.
