History: This pointer/retriever was developed in the nineteenth century, probably from poodles and spaniels such as the Irish water spaniel, Picardy spaniel, and barbet. It was red to point and retrieve duck. It is very rare, even in France.
Physical Description: This is a stocky, medium size dog with a narrow head, brown nose, amber or hazel eyes, and long drop ears that are set away from the head. The medium-long tail is docked to one-third its length and carried straight, or left natural or curved. The curly, slightly rough coat is brown or brown and gray mottled. There is a topknot.

Weight: 40 to 53 pounds
Temperament: The breed is enthusiastic, friendly, adaptable, both a hard worker and an easygoing companion. It enjoys children and loves to swim.

Best Owner: It does best with an active family in the suburbs or country but can adjust to city life with enough exercise and attention.
