History: The Estrela mountain dog is an ancient breed, reputed to be the oldest breed of the Iberan Peninsula. It was developed as a livestock guardian and drafting dog. It came close to extinction in the 1970s but Portuguese breeders worked to revitalize it, and its numbers are rising.

<b>The<i> Estrela Mountain Dog</i></b>

Physical Description: This is a large, powerful, compact dog with a strong head; long, tapering muzzle; and a dark nose with wide nostrils. The amber eyes are oval in shape and the thin, round drop ears are laidback. It has a short, thick neck and sickle shaped tail. The short, thick coat is fawn, brindle, gray or yellow with white or self colored markings.

Height: 25.5 to 28.5 inches

Weight: 66 to 110 pounds

Temperament: The Estrela mountain dog is affectionate with family but wary with strangers. It gets along with children and most animals. Although it can be stubborn, it makes a gentle and devoted companion.

Activity Level: Moderate

Best Owner: This is an adaptable dog that does well in both suburban and rural homes with an active or sedentary family or individual.
