Guardian breed mixes have developed a poor reputation in recent years. Indiscriminate breeding and the intentional breeding of aggressive dogs to large mastiff mixes have led to concern about their dangerous potential and even legislation of so-called dangerous breed bands. Unfortunately, the ban allowed many wonderful guardian mixes to languish in rescues and shelters.
Rottweiler mixes are some of the most common dogs found in shelters and many make wonderful companions. There are also many mastiffs, Saint Bernard, Great Dane, Great Pyrenees, and Newfoundland mixes that are gentle giants and truly round out an active family. The guardian mixes do require extensive socialization and training with people and animals. Their large size is also an issue when it comes to space and economics. Big dogs require room and cost more than smaller dogs for grooming, boarding, food and veterinary expenses.
Guardian dogs and their mixes are large dominant dogs; keep this in mind when considering adopting one. Work with your shelter or rescue to determine if you have the right lifestyle for a dog like this.
