1. Keep it short and sweet. You should try to keep your dog's name to one or two syllables this will help to make it much easier for your dog to understand. The general rule of thumb is the longer a name is, the more confusing it will be for your dog or puppy to understand.
2. Try to end the name in a long sounding vowel. This will aid your dog in recognizing its own name from other commands. It will also help to get your dogs attention when you call his name.
3. Try to avoid giving your dog a human name. When you give your dog a human name, you make the dog one of "us", and although we do think of our four legged friends as family, there do need to be some rules set aside for them to follow.
4. Naturally you will want to stay away from names which sound Similar to obedience commands, like "sit", "down", "stay", "come", etc. Imagine giving your dog the command, "Bit, sit." Or “Faye, stay” You can see how the puppy could get very confused.
5. Lastly, you should pick a name that you like! You can base the name on anything, some examples are (cars, sports, hobbies, etc) that you are passionate about.
Remember, these are just guidelines, and there are no rules for naming your dog. Only you will know when you have picked out the perfect name for your puppy.
