History: The Bavarian mountain hound is descended from the bloodhound-like Hanoverian schweisshunds and Bavarian scenthounds and was developed in the late 19th century. It is the most popular and common scenthound kept in the Bavarian mountain region.

Physical Description: This is a medium size, muscular, lightly build dog that is longer than it is tall. The skull and muzzle are broad. There is a black or dark red nose, brown eyes, and medium-length drop ears. The tail is medium length and set high. The thick, short coat is slightly longer and harsh on the belly, legs, and tail and finer on the ears and head. The coat is red, tan, fawn, or reddish gray, grizzled or brindled. There may be a lighter mark on the chest. The coat is darkest at the ears and muzzle.

Weight: 53 to 80 pounds

Temperament: This is an easygoing, trainable dog, affectionate with its family but wary with strangers. It is generally calm and not shy.

Activity Level: High

Best Owner: This breed does well with an active family in a rural or suburban environment.
