All You Need to Know about Small Dogs

Written by:
If you have decided to buy or adopt a dog, but you are afraid a mid-sized or large dog would cause you trouble, the option available to you consists of small dogs. Such little furry friends are just as fun (or maybe even more) as bigger-sized canine companions, and they can brighten your days with their playful behavior without causing you too much trouble.

All You Need to Know about Small Dogs

Small dogs are considered to be those that weigh less than 22lbs and are shorter than 16 inches. The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog, whereas the “tallest” of the small breeds is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Although some dogs may weigh more or be more robust than others (such as miniature bull terriers), they are still included in the small-sized breeds.

What you should not forget is the fact that small-sized breeds (just like any dog breed) possess different behaviors and physical traits based on their genes, so if you plan on getting a dog just because you like how it looks, you should reconsider your choice.

Shedding
As petite dogs are usually indoor pets, before choosing your new animal companion, you should make sure it does not shed too much, unless you want to sweep or vacuum around the house every single day.

The shedding matter is complex when it comes to small dog breeds. While some may not lose a single hair, others shed tons and tons of hair. Moderate shedding small dogs (such as the Shih Tzu) will leave little hairs around the house, but you will have a much larger variety to choose from than if you want to get a non-shedding dog.

Training
Because of the different characteristics each breed possesses, small dogs can be trained in an unspecified amount of time. Some may need more time to learn the commands that other breeds learn within days. It is all a matter of genetics when it comes to this. It is up to you to decide if you want a dog that is a slow learner or if you are more pleased with a fast learner that can pick up more commands in a shorter period of time.

Grooming
Some breeds require very little maintenance, which means almost no cleaning and grooming. Other dogs will have to be brushed regularly in order for their fur to keep its brightness and health intact. Do not adopt a dog unless you are sure you can provide them with everything they need in order to be happy and healthy.

Now that you have an idea of what it means to own a small-sized pet, you can make up your mind about the cute furry friend you want to bring home. You have a great number of options to go through. Any of the small dogs present in dog shelters and adoption agencies will be more than happy to accompany you home - and you will have the satisfaction that you saved a life when you have chosen your new canine friend.
