Slim, agile, and a rapid vermin-hunter, this dog reaches 8-12 inches (20-30 cm) in height and weighs 6.5-15.5 pounds (3-7 kg). A hairless variety was documented a long time ago, when weather in Greece was much hotter. Nevertheless, as the temperature lowered, so did the number of hairless Alopekis. Moreover, since it was not very attractive, the local people allowed the hairless variety to go extinct. Todays representatives of the breed have a wide range of colors, from beige to red and black, commonly with white patches.
Despite its age, the breed is not yet recognized by the American Kennel Club. Therefore, it is not widely known or looked for as a pet, which is a pity, since it does not lack any feature to make a great companion and an always optimistic friend.
Its playful and enthusiastic temperament makes it a perfect choice if you want some spark in your life. The breed is easily adaptable to any kind of environment, from apartments in big cities to semi-urban or rural houses. It can be a favorite pick for those who love small-sized dogs that only need average exercise - usually long walks, meant to exhaust its energy or just to lower it to acceptable levels. It is generally healthy and can live more than 14 years.
With proper training and consistent proof that its master is the pack leader, the Alopekis will obey orders appropriately and will not manifest the so-called small dog syndrome. The breed is very active, curious, friendly and bright, and responds quickly to orders and stimuli. It is a resourceful, faithful and protective dog, developing a relationship with its master in no time.
If you have kids, they will love this dog and the feeling will definitely be mutual, because their levels of energy match. They will be devoted to each other, running, playing tirelessly and building a relationship much quicker than other breeds that would prefer to keep their independence as much as possible.
The Alopekis is generous when it comes to sharing its feelings. It is sociable and happy by nature. Do not mistake it for a dog lacking personality, though. It is just that its meaning is to please its masters and make itself a pleasant companion, while remaining self-confident and alert. If you want to have an excellent relationship with it, make sure that you remind it you are the leader of the pack every now, and then and things will go smoothly. This breed does not take long to understand who is the head of the family and will not sport an ill-tempered attitude.
If you want an old breed that would enlighten your days and tirelessly play with your kids, the Alopekis will fill this position perfectly.
