With deep roots in the old Turkey, this large and powerful dog is a veritable descendant of ancient livestock guardian dogs that were used during transhumance. Also called the Turkish Mountain Dog or the Anatolian Blackhead, this breed does an excellent job guarding flocks of sheep against wild animals. Of course, in modern times, breeders took an immense interest in this dog, and tried to enhance its traits through selective breeding. How do you recognize an Anatolian Sheppard Dog?
The appearance of this dog makes it extremely special. You will immediately like it and trust to be the best guardian you could ever think of. Because of its main purpose, it needs to be a muscular dog, with thick, strong neck and massive, powerful body, yet quite thin and athletic. The regular height ranges between 26 and 31 inches. These dogs' weigh varies between 41-68 kg, but they may seem heavier than that because of their thick and short coat. The color of the Anatolian Blackhead may vary from fawn with black mask to white with colored spots; it can also be pinto or brindle.
What are they like?
The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is remarkably loyal. Always alert, they can quickly reach appreciable speed in order to do their job well. They tend to be quite independent and need a hugely determined person as an owner, because they need strong leadership. They will prove to be very intelligent, and that is why they are not very difficult to train. It is not advisable to keep them indoors, but if this is the case, you should properly train them in order to prevent unpleasant situations. They are truly brave dogs, yet not aggressive if there is no reason for it.
Do they need particular training?
All dogs should get proper training, because it is the only way you will all be happy together. You do not want to spend your time correcting misbehavior and trying to cope with a disobeying dog, do you?
It is essential that you teach your dog that you are in charge. This is a watch dog with highly protective instincts. It is very likely that these dogs will become so attached to their owner that they may act aggressively with anyone who is not family. The owner must understand the canine instinct, and know exactly what to do be seen as the leader of the "pack". Moreover, you need to decide clearly enough why you choose to have an Anatolian Shepherd Dog. Is it because you needed a lovely pet? Or is it because you need a trustful guardian? Remember that you can not have them both.
Clever and agile, this dog needs you to understand and love it enough to put some effort into taking care of it. This is extremely essential when you own an Anatolian Shepherd Dog.
