The Small Dog With a Massive Dose of Energy

At a glimpse, the Atlas Terrier can be easily mistaken with the Jack Russell Terrier. However, there are some differences that may help you tell these two cousins apart. Before deciding to buy or adopt a dog of this breed, there are some things that you have to take into consideration. Unfortunately, this is quite a rare breed of dogs in our days.

Character
Unfortunately, very little is known about the origin of this dog for us to draw any conclusions related to its personality traits. It is believed that it is a crossing of several Terrier breeds, such as the Manchester Terrier, Fox Terrier and Border Terrier, but nothing has been proven so far.

Because of its rather small stature, this dog was used for killing mostly vermin, such as rats or snakes. It is amazing how this small dog can be filled with so much energy. You could almost read the enthusiasm off his face. This is, without a doubt, one of the happiest dogs you will ever meet.

Once you adopt him and he starts to trust you, the two of you will never be apart again. The Atlas Terrier is very fond of humans and will most likely make a terrible guard dog. He seeks attention all the time and loves to play. He is also easy to train and very smart, learning tricks really fast. While you are enjoying a movie lying on the couch, do not be surprised if this little Terrier climbs on your lap for an afternoon sleep. He is suitable for apartment life as well as for the great outdoors, but always remember to take him out because he enjoys long walks.

Appearance
The Atlas Terrier comes in three different sizes: toy (9 to 11 inches in height and 6 to 12 pounds in weight), miniature (11 to 13 inches in height and 10 to 15 pounds in weight) and standard (13 to 15 inches in height and 13 to 18 pounds in weight) size. The folded ears are V-shaped, a visual element which make this dog look simply adorable. The coat can be either smooth or wire haired, just as the tail can be docked or natural. This dog comes in a wide variety of colors but portions of white are to be found only in areas such as the neck, chest, face or toes.

Health & Hygiene
While it may seem that this energetic dog could never have any health problems, there are some risks that you must be aware of. There are chances that the Atlas Terrier will dislocate its knees (in medical terms, “patellar luxation”) or develop hearing issues that could eventually lead to deafness. Dental issues are also to be taken care of, as well as severe ear infections. Both types of coat, smooth and wire, are easy to groom and, with a proper shampooing, taking care of this dogs hygiene is a breeze.

Consider the Atlas Terrier an excellent companion - as he is so eager to please his owner, he will do anything that is required for his masters happiness.
