The Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher, or simply the Austrian Pinscher, is a dog breed that originates from Austria, where this breed of pinscher-type dogs was mostly kept on farms to help keep the rats away from the barns and to guard and guide the livestock.

The dogs from this breed have a pear-shaped head, feet with well arched toes and elbows that are rather close to the body. As for the chest, it is very well developed and wide. The colors of the coat include black, red, brown, brindle, fawn or black/tan, and the fur has limited white markings as a common pattern. These dogs have button-like ears and a long tail that they usually keep in an upright position, giving them the look of a guard dog, always alert. The life expectancy for these dogs is about 14 years. The dogs from the Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher breed are medium in height. These dogs are usually 14 to 20 inches high and their normal weight is about 26 to 40 pounds. The dogs from this breed are not just fearless guards, but they are also great companions, always in the mood to play with you.

In order for this particular breed to excel, you must assure that the dogs have the right amount of exercise, a job to do and proper leadership.
