The Bearded Collie

A Great Shepherd Dog

The Bearded Collie, or simply referred to as Beardie, is a herding dog that the Scottish shepherds used a while ago, and it is a mixture between the Polish Lowland Sheepdog with the local Scottish sheepdog. The popularity of this breed has increased in the latter half of the 20th century, as the dogs are great family pets and show dogs, as well as working dogs.

The Bearded Collie is a medium sized breed, with an average height of around 55 centimeters in males and 52 centimeters in females. They can weigh between 18 and 27 kilograms. The dogs are very strong, although their appearance is quite light.

You can easily recognize a Bearded Collie due to its stature and well-proportioned head, with a broad and flat skull and a moderate stop. The eyes are very expressive and large, and set widely apart. The medium sized ears, barely seen under the long hair make the image complete.

Beardies have a long double coat, with furnishings, which follows the lines of the body, at the same time allowing air to ventilate the skin. Generally, the coat of these dogs is colored in blue, black, fawn or brown, with tan or white markings on the eyebrows, cheeks and inside of the ears. The pigmentation follows the color of the coat, as well as the color of the eyes.

Their body allows them to move freely, powerfully and in a supple manner. When running, the dogs of the Bearded Collie breed leave the impression that they are simply gliding along, with minimum contact to the ground, as the feet are only lifted to clear the ground. Sudden stops and sharp turns are possible due to the flexible movements.

The Beardie dogs are loyal, friendly, hardy and reliable, and they are used for herding cattle or sheep. They are so popular because of their ability to withstand the toughest conditions and their high energy levels. These dogs do not show any signs of aggression, and they are very self-confident and stable.

As pets, the Bearded Collie dogs are known to be very docile, friendly and sociable with other pets and people. The only disadvantage seems to be the grooming issue. The Beardies must be washed and groomed regularly. Daily brushing is a must. The dogs are also very active, and need daily exercise. For families with a large yard where the dogs can run freely, the Beardies make perfect pets.

Beardies usually live between 10 and 14 years. Owners must be careful about Addisons Disease, which affects about 3 percent of all dogs of this breed, and can be often misdiagnosed, as the symptoms are initially vague. Dogs with this disease can live a relatively normal life with proper medication, if diagnosed on time.

One of the oldest breeds in Britain, the Beardies are affectionate, active and outgoing. There is no trace of aggression in their temper, so if you consider adopting a Bearded Collie, there is not one single reason why you should not.
