The Belgian Mastiff

It is said that the original Belgian Mastiff no longer exists, but some experts say there might still be some traces of this breed. And there are also breeders who try to recreate this type of dog from specific standards. These dogs were first used to pull carts for people who could not afford to buy themselves a mule. The breed was also used by the Belgian army to help them carry their equipment and also for guard work, search and rescue operations or tracking.

These Mastiffs can reach a maximum height of 27-32 inches (69-78 cm) and can weigh up to 99-110 (45-50 kg). They have a strong shape and a well proportionate muscle mass. Their skin is loose but tough, and the muzzle is short and square. They somehow resemble the French hounds. Their forehead, skull and ears are well developed and quite large. Also, the neck and chest are strong and impressive, due to their origin as working dogs who pulled heavy carts.

In other words, the Belgian Mastiff is a dog with an athletic appearance. It looks imposing and it is massive, as all Molossers are. It has a short hair coat that varies in color from red, brown, fawn to black with white markings and that is easy to groom and take care of. Although it is not very friendly, this dog can be really loyal and protective with its master. It shows a calm and intelligent attitude and it can express itself in a powerful manner, especially in those cases when it feels that its master is somehow threatened. It is a kind of aggression that can be kept latent, as long as the owner provides proper training. But these are obedient dogs and can be brought to proper socializing if taught from a young age and with consistency.

The Belgian Mastiff needs constant activities besides the usual daily walks. Because of its origin as a hardworking dog, it needs to know it has always something to do to spend all the extra energy. It is obedient and takes its masters commands seriously. The Belgian Mastiff is a good family dog and it loves children, but it is not a very good choice as a first dog because of its size and nature. It is a breed that creates an imposing image and a gives off an attitude of respect, as it knows its place inside the family and among other dogs. These pets' harsh stature makes you think they might be uncontrollable and aggressive, but they are just serious and firm. They have a wise look to them and their eyes are full of confidence and sincere loyalty.

Whether your are used to dogs of any kind or to a breed of this particular size and type, the Belgian Mastiff would be a dog that you can rely on, a dog with honest reactions and one that offers you a good sense of trust and safety.
