The Belgian Griffons are a type of toy dogs, named after their country of origin: Belgium. They were first used as guard dogs for cabs in Brussels but, in the early 20th century, the breed gained popularity in Belgium and thus was more and more demanded by nobility.
These dogs can reach a maximum height of around 8 inches (20 cm) and a weight of 6-12 pounds (2.5-5.5 kg). The Griffons are of three types: the Brussels, the Belgian and the Petit Griffon. The Petit Griffon is smooth coated, while the Belgian and the Brussels Griffons have a wiry and dense coat. They shed little to almost no hair. They can live up to 15 years. Unfortunately, they can develop respiratory and eye problems and can be quite sensitive to heat; therefore owners should avoid exposing them to extreme temperatures.
Coat colors include red, belge (a mixture of black and red-brown), black and tan or solid black. Like the majority of toy dogs (in here we also include Spaniels, Pinschers and Terriers), this breed is very affectionate and sensitive. They do not only enjoy being around people, but they are actually dependent on it. They became a companion breed due to their appealing character. The domed forehead (a monkey-like expression) of their round head makes them seem always grumpy or angry, but actually they are quite the opposite. The Belgian Griffons are cheerful, very playful and have a special personality. They may be very difficult to find in animal centers or shops, as they are somewhat rare. The breed survived the two World Wars only due to dedicated and loving breeders.
They enjoy being around other animals, like dogs and cats. They are very affectionate and curious. They are cheerful and can learn tricks quickly. Due to size and behavior, this breed is very good for apartment life - a large space or a yard will not be necessary. Although these dogs are very active indoors, they still need their daily walks, just like any other dog. Because the griffon can be sensitive to loud sounds or sudden actions, it is not recommended for it to be left alone with children.
The Belgian Griffons are quite dependent on their owners. They like consistency and calm, and that is why their best owners would be old couples or adults who live alone. They are a breed that needs all the attention in the house and tends to become moody and spoiled sometimes. The breed is not an aggressive one, but when finding themselves in new situations or meeting new people, these pets might feel threatened and react with a snap. The Belgian Griffons are intelligent and alert, but at the same time full of self-importance. They can sometimes get into trouble, as they have no actual concept of their own size and attempt to dominate larger dogs.
This is a playful and lovable dog, but can sometimes become grumpy and stubborn. And when it knits its brows in disagreement, you always know that it surely wants to be the boss. The Belgian Griffons have a unique character and they are sure to bring joy into a home.
