The Chien de lAtlas, also known as the Aidi or Kabyle Dog, is a flock guard that was used to protect humans and their property, mainly herds of goats and sheep. It was also known under the name of Atlas Sheepdog, although it has never been used as a sheepdog, only as a flock guard that protected the livestock from wildcats or other predators and from strangers. Sometimes it is also named the Berber dog, because it was used by the Berber tribes. Its native country is Morocco, but can be also found in Algeria, Libya and Tunisia.
It is naturally protective, strong and fearless, making an excellent watchdog. Its good sense of smell makes it a reliable hunter too. When hunting, it is usually paired with the Sloughi, which chases down prey after the Aidi tracked it.
With a height of 21- 24 inches (53-61 cm.) and a weight of 50-55 pounds (23-25 kg.), the Aidi is a medium sized dog that has a solid, robust body, a broad chest and a large back.
It is an intelligent dog, ready to accomplish his role as a guardian. It is constantly alert and curious, very independent and always suspicious about strangers and other animals. Since guarding is in its blood, it may become aggressive to strangers. A firm, but kind training and a proper socializing will fix this problem. The Chien de lAtlas is usually easy to train, though, sometimes, it has the tendency of becoming the Alpha dog.
The thick, dense coat can adapt to harsh weather conditions, whether mountain cold or desert heat. The coat can be white, pale red, black and tawny. The hair is 6 cm long and it has to be brushed weekly and more frequently when shedding. It usually sheds heavily twice a year. It should be also bathed two times a year.
Although quiet and clean in the house, it should not be kept in an apartment. It needs outdoor activity. The ideal place would be the countryside or a rural setting. Very active and agile, it needs space and exercise, but most importantly, it needs to be given a task, a job to do, because, apart from the guarding role, it is a working dog. It has high level of energy that needs to be consumed. Otherwise it will become restless or even destructive. Apart from physical exercise, mental stimulation is recommended for a healthy companion.
Usually, there are no breed related problems. Owners should be careful about providing the dog with enough opportunities of exercising, to avoid obesity. If you are planning to acquire a puppy of this breed, you should check it for hip dysplasia too.
The Aidi is not recommended for families with young children, unless socialized from an early age.
Lately, this rare breed has known an increase in popularity. The bear-like appearance and the gentle, sensitive nature have conquered the hearts of many owners. As a pet, the Chien de lAtlas is affectionate and docile, not to mention very protective and loyal.
