Amongst the many attractive breed variations derived from the Picardy Spaniel, one of the most interesting ones has got to be the Blue Picardy Spaniel. This is a cross between the authentic Picardy Spaniel and the English Setter, and it originated in the mid 1800s in France. However, most of the traits of this dogs personality and appearance were passed on by the Picardy Spaniel, hence the name of the new breed.

The coat on this breed is very similar to that of the Picardy Spaniel, maybe a little bit softer. However, it always stands out because of the unique color, in this case a mixture between grey and black in various hues, and flocks that combined give out a blue nuance, with a few pronounced black patches, a characteristic brought by the Setter.

However, there are certain other traits in the physical appearance of the Blue Picardy Spaniel which were genetically transmitted from its other parent the English Setter. Like the Setter, the dogs from this breed have long legs, longer than the average in a medium sized dog. He is also well built, with strong muscles on both the front and the hind legs, and has a straight tail. All of these “foreign” elements make him a faster dog than the Picardy Spaniel. In addition, he also has a much more refined sense of smell. Another characteristic of this breed is the distinctive nose and muzzle, slightly long and broad and covered with silky long hairs, much like the ears. Like many dogs with pendulous ears, he can easily contact ear infections. Apart from this, there are no known health problems typical to this breed.

On the personality level, the Blue Picardy Spaniel is everything a Picardy Spaniel should be he is extremely playful, even hyperactive, ideal as a pet for children. Naturally, he is very affectionate and attentive, and is very easy to train because he simply loves the company of humans. He is a good watch dog, but he also has a very peaceful nature and will usually get along with most other animals. Apart from his very high stamina, this dog is considered to be particularly quiet, calm and patient.

For those considering adopting a Blue Picardy Spaniel, it is of paramount importance that you do not confuse the good nature of this dog with laziness. This is a very active breed that needs regular exercise. This is a sporting breed, therefore it has a tremendous amount of energy and endurance. This dog is also an instinctive hunter, but it has no problems just walking around at a steady pace. It does not require a vast running terrain, but daily exercise and long walks are compulsory.

It is needles to say what a wonderful companion this dog makes, considering all the wonderful traits of his personality. However, he does not appreciate being left alone for a long time and he also requires a bit more attention than other dogs, both mental and physical this means regular brushing and attention to the ear area.
