This dog is also known as the podenco canario and it can boast with its relentless passion for hunting. As a matter of fact, this breed is primarily known for its excellent hunting abilities. So, if you have a thing for hunting, this dog breed will surprise you with its agility and highly-developed senses. Does this breed possess any distinctive physical traits?
You will recognize this dog from a million because its traits are very special. As a medium sized-breed, the Canarian Warren Hound possesses a good musculature and lines that are extremely agile. Their head is elongated, shaped like a cone. The color of their eyes is usually hazel but it can vary from a specimen to another. If these features are not enough to captivate your attention so far, then the ears certainly deserve a closer look. They are large and erect and this makes the dog look like hes always on alert, trying to capture the slightest noise or movement.
As for its hair, this species possesses a short fur, which is straight and really dense. As for the color, it can be either red or white or a mix of the two. In terms of height, the males can reach 64 cm whereas females are only 56 cm in adulthood. When it comes to the weight, if they are properly raised and taken care of, they can weigh somewhere around 24 or 25 kg. What about its character traits?
In spite of their constant agility and connectedness to the external stimuli, this breed does not display signs of aggressiveness. They are very loyal and love their masters beyond measure. With the other people around, they are mildly affectionate. The thing that will leave you speechless is how independent they can be, sometimes with the price of a slight stubbornness. Does it make a good pet?
People who already have a Warren hound in their household claim that they make wonderful pets because they are affectionate and friendly in nature. In spite of their slight nervousness, the dog is said to be socializing very well, especially when raised with children. Furthermore, it tolerates very well small children and can make friends easily with other pets. However, there might be a problem in terms of space. They need large spaces where they can feel free and this will not happen if you live in an apartment.
If you fail to provide your Warren dog with enough space, you will find it very difficult to control it. They do not bark a lot but they can dig in the strangest places. If they get really bored, they can design a tunnel under a fence in a matter of minutes. Another “peccadillo” would be the fact that the Canarian Warren Hound tends to chew a lot.
