The Canary Dog Can Make a Wonderful Addition to Your Family

If you are searching for a canine companion and a good guardian, then the Canary dog is probably the best choice you can make. This breed was developed in the Canary Islands during the 1800s with the purpose of using the dogs in fights. This should not be surprising, since, in most European countries, in the past centuries, dog fighting used to be a very popular entertainment, unfortunately. Nevertheless, nowadays such an endeavor is illegal. So, it is advisable to stay away from such actions.

The characteristic color for this species is brindle or fawn. As for the face, dogs from the Canary breed should feature a dark brown or black mask that must not go over the eyes. Sometimes, a white patch may be visible on the head. These dogs' coat is short and rough, but, in spite of these features, it can be easily groomed. Grooming will also prove fairly inexpensive. All you need is a good bristle brush for combing. To make the coat shine, use a soft piece of cloth or chamois. Do not forget to wash the dog when needed. An extra tip here: ask the veterinary doctor about the right shampoo.

Canary dogs are really strong, with a chest that is deep and broad. They can be easily identified due to their square-shaped head. They can weigh up to 50 kg because of their dense bones, strong muscles and thick skin. Most of the dogs have their ears cropped.

Like any other dog breed, the Canary dog has its health issues. For instance, they can suffer of hip dysplasia or luxating patella. Other afflictions include skin cysts and epilepsy. Many of these disorders appear in the case of puppies that have been raised in inappropriate conditions. So, do your best to keep their kennel clean. Provide them with adequate food and always make sure that they get plenty of exercise.

If you are a shy person, who has problems in establishing authority, then getting a dog from the Canary breed is not the best idea. These dogs need a dominant owner, otherwise they will take the role of the alpha male in the pack. When you decide to take such a dog for a walk, try to step in front of it. This is the right way to show that you are holding the lead - naturally, the pack leader walks first.

If you need them for guarding purposes, then you have made the perfect choice. No intruder will bother you anymore. Only seeing this dog from afar, the thieves will be scared. All the aspects mentioned might make some people think that this dog is aggressive, but this is surely not the case. If you know how to train it, it will make a great companion. These dogs are devoted and seek human presence very often.

Picking the right Canary puppy will make your entire family happier. The essential thing would be to purchase your Canary dog from an authorized pet shop and consult a vet about the right way to raise it.
