The Buldogue Campeiro is a Brazilian dog breed and is a descendent of an extinct breed, the old English bulldog. Other names include Bulldog Pampas, Bordoga, Burdogue, Bulldog Pampeano or Pampas.
This dog is a working dog and it used to have the role of a cowboy dog. In the 70s, it became in danger of extinction, but was eventually saved. Classified as medium sized, its body is robust and strong. The ears are of a small/medium size compared to the rest of its body and are folded over. The tail is short and its coat has smooth hair.
Weighing around 35 to 40 kilograms and with a height of 48 to 58 centimeters (depending on the gender), the Buldogue Campeiro is a healthy dog in general, with a strong, well built body. Because of its body structure, this dog will need daily walks and exercise, any kind of physical activity being good for it (including running, games and so on); still, do not forget that, even though it has a strong physique, it is not a racing or a hunting dog, so be careful not to overwork it.
As to what health is concerned, issues may appear regarding hip dysplasia. Also, owners should be careful of parasite problems and infections and prevent them through appropriate care and treatment (vaccination, regular vet visits).
The coat of the Buldogue Campeiro is short and smooth. Easy to maintain, it comes in various colors (several shades of brown, grey, white, black), and markings will appear on various parts of the body (chest, legs, head, neck) practically, for this breed, all kinds of color combinations are possible and accepted. When it comes to brushing the coat, this is an easy task, and should be done once in a while; also, bathing needs to be done only when necessary overall, it has an easy to maintain coat.
This Bulldog, being a medium sized dog, can adapt well to both apartment and house/yard conditions. Even if it is true that any animal would prefer a yard all to itself rather than the small space of an apartment, with proper care and daily exercise it can do well in any of the above mentioned cases.
As to what behavior is concerned, one may be fooled by its aggressive look. Despite this first impression, the Buldogue Campeiro is docile and obedient to its owner (only strangers should be afraid). If not provoked, this dog will display a very calm and cool attitude.
Easy to train in general - if the training is started at an early age - this Bulldog will show obedience, loyalty and be a good companion in order for this to happen, the owner has to make sure to let the dog know who is in command.
This dog has a courageous and protective personality, doing all that is needed to assure the safety of its family. On the other hand, opposed to its attitude towards strangers, this Bulldog is actually a very loving pet extremely affectionate, obedient and loyal to its owners, it is patient and caring with children and makes a great pet.
The Buldogue Campeiro has a complex personality it knows how to make the difference between strangers and friends (and it can be aggressive when it comes to protection), but, at the same time, it is obedient, affectionate and loyal to its owners, all of these making it the perfect pet for anyone.
