The French White and Orange Hound

Milk and Honey Not Only on the Outside

The French White and Orange Hound, by its original name Chien Français Blanc et Orange, is a type of dog bred for hunting as a scent hound. This breed is guided by scent rather than sight. It is also a pack hunting dog rooted in France.

The French White and Orange Hound is named after its unique coat, colored in white and orange. This is a large dog with a muscular body, but lean shapes. Its body may be solid, but it is supple and elegant. The head is slightly domed and large and, like the other hounds, it has a long muzzle with wide nostrils that catch any kind of scent. The nose is black or brown and the eyes are round and dark. Its ears are long, flopped and slightly curled. Its neck is thick, solid and short, but its body is well-defined. It has a broad chest and a straight back which make the running easier by saving large amounts of oxygen in its lungs. However, its main job is not to run, but to track. The legs and the tail are long and supple.

The coat is short and smooth with an unusual brilliance of white and orange. The orange marks should not be too dark, close to red. Its skin is the same as its coat - under the orange marks it is orange and under the white fur it is white. The differences between males and females are slightly noticeable - their median sizes are 23 and 28 inches (62 to 70 cm).

As mentioned before, the duty of this dog is to hunt in packs and to track the prey. It is also highly appreciated by hunters because of its scenting sense. This dog can work for hours without a pause and can retain different kinds of smell. And the list of qualities does not end here: it is one of the hounds that can make a good family pet. The nature of this working dog is just like "milk and honey", and its gentle personality can mould any type of person into an athlete. It is very loyal and devoted to its master and, with proper training, it can adapt pretty well to all environments.

Nevertheless, the owner must keep in mind that pack hunting dogs will always have something different than the rest and that is their boundless energy. Early training is necessary for a good mental health and a proper relationship with the dog. Even if this breed appears to be more independent than others, it is important to know that pack hounds are always directed by humans. This dog requires lots of exercise, long walks and plenty of space to run or chase small animals. It is very intelligent and agile and does not need anything more than a calm and firm tone. What is more, it has no health problems and the grooming is minimal.

The French White and Orange Hound is the perfect dog for active owners who want a gentle and loyal companion.
