One of the oldest friends of man - the Canaan Dog.

The History of the Canaan Dogs
The Canaan Dogs originated out of the crossing of wild dogs breeds from Israel in the area known as Canaan around 1930s. Archaeological sites indicate that these dogs have been known friends of the man for 2200 years. Back in the days, the fathers of the Canaan Dog, also known as Kelef Kanani to the ancient people of Israel, were particularly used as guardians for their camps and sheep, and for herding the flocks. The modern Canaan Dog breed was found by Dr. Rudolphina Menzel, who trained and used this dog in mine detection, area in which they are specially gifted, in the service of the forces in Middle East. Later on, in 1965 these breed was imported to United States. However, they were not recognized by the AKC until 1997.

The Physical Description of the Breed
In terms of appearance, the Canaan Dogs weight is somewhere between 35 to 55 pounds (16-25kg) with a height of 19 to 24 inches (48-61cm). These dogs are medium in size and with square proportions. The muzzle is almost equal in size to their skull and they have liver-colored noses. Their eyes are usually hazel and they have very erect ears. They also have an arched neck and straight legs, along with a high set tail. The Canaan Dogs coat is double and colored in red, white, black, brown, sandy or in combinations of all these colors. Being a heavy shedder, these dogs need to be combed and brushed at least once a week, and extra when in shedding.

The Activity and the Temperament of the Canaan Dogs
The Canaan Dogs are excellent herders and trackers. They are excellent watchdogs with great territorial instincts. They also have the tendency to be aggressive towards other dogs due to their high dominancy instinct. Especially because of these reasons, the Canaan Dogs should be, at an early age, well socialized with dogs and people, especially children. The future owners of this type of dogs should be fast in achieving a pack leader status in order to avoid the dogs confusion in this direction. This is highly recommended, because the lack of order, rules or role confusion will make the dog to express its displeasure by growling and eventually biting.

The Canaan Dogs are happy living in both houses with yards or apartments, as long as they get enough exercise. Furthermore, being such an intelligent breed they need both physical and mental challenges, meaning long daily walks, herding exercises, strenuous game sessions and, if possible, challenging training sessions.

The Personality of the Canaan Dog
In terms of personality, if raised properly the Canaan Dogs are gentle, devoted and protective towards children. However, the children should be thought how to approach a dog in a correct manner. They should never take a dogs food, or approach a dog while it is sleeping. Moreover, they should never be left alone with a dog, regardless the breed.
