Bouvier de Ardennes

A Mixture Between Serious and Playful

The Bouvier de Ardennes is a dog breed that has its origins in Belgium. Thought to be extinct at first, this type of herder dog is still very rare and is one of the last two Bouvier breeds that managed to survive, while others (Bouvier de Roulers, Bouvier de Moerman, Bouvier de Paret) disappeared during the 20th Century.

A medium-sized dog breed, with a compact body structure and rough fur that gives it a rugged appearance, the Bouvier de Ardennes was used in the past on farms, to drive and guard cows, sheep and even pigs, and it is a very intelligent and responsible dog, with strong physical abilities such as speed and strong orientation instincts.

Their bodies are powerful, well-muscled, with a very dense coat that does not permit water to go through, giving them some resistance when it comes to bad weather. Around 5-6 centimeters long across the body and shorter on the head, the fur forms a 5 centimeters long beard and moustache. These dogs can be of almost any color, except white (which can appear only as small spots on the chest or toes), usually displaying a grey, black and fawn combination and, sometimes, may come in brown, red and straw shades. Because of its characteristics, the coat needs some care, with regular bathing and brushing, but only when necessary a lot less compared to other breeds.

As to what size is concerned, the height and weight of the Bouvier de Ardennes differs depending on the gender of the dog; thus, a male can be between 56 and 63 centimeters tall and can weigh 27-34 kilograms, while the females reach 50-55 centimeters in height and 21-27 kilograms in weight.

In general, the dogs of this breed are strong and healthy, having a life span of 11-12 years. Because of their origins and body structure, they need regular exercise, being very active animals; so, this is a more appropriate pet for a house with a yard, rather than an apartment, though it can adapt to the second case as well, if the owner makes sure to take it on long walks and do things that require its physical abilities.

The Bouvier de Ardennes has a lot of energy and may endure effort easier than other dogs, this fact making it a perfect companion for people that like hiking, running or riding bicycles. It is very playful, sociable and curious about everything, and it can adapt fast to different situations, like meeting new people (in the company of their owners) or being around children. Agile, with a strongly developed protection instinct, this Bouvier will courageously defend its territory, family and personal possessions at all times and by all means it is a perfect house pet and a trustworthy guard dog. These dogs are obedient and very intelligent, so they will be easy to train.

Having a strong sense of responsibility and, at the same time, an affectionate attitude towards its owners, this dog will be a loyal and friendly companion. Good with children, adaptable, disciplined and very intelligent, the Bouvier de Ardennes can be the perfect pet for the family and also a strong and courageous guard dog for your home.
