The Bracco Italiano is a pointer dog that has its origins in Italy, being one of the breeds that are considered gun dogs, because of their strong hunting instincts. Also called Italian Pointer or Italian Pointing Dog, it strongly resembles a cross between the Bloodhound and the German Shorthaired Pointer; some opinions refer to it as being a cross of the ancient Assyrian mastiff and Egyptian coursing hound. With a solemn facial expression, a feature that distinguishes it from other breeds, the Bracco is not a common dog, even in its native country.
As a general image, the Bracco Italiano is strong, with a well built and proportioned body. Being a hunting dog, its physical abilities are remarkable, and that can be easily seen at first glance.
The Italian Pointer's dense coat has short hair and a glossy appearance. Generally hard in texture, the fur is a bit shorter and softer on the head and legs. The usual colors of the coat are either a mixture of white and orange or roan and brown, with chestnut or amber markings on various parts of the body (face, ears, tail). Because of the coats characteristics, it needs bathing only when it gets dirty and brushing once in a while, to help the shedding process.
With a life span of 12-13 years, the Bracco Italiano reaches somewhere around 53-67 centimeters in height and weighs 24-39 kilograms. It is a strong and healthy breed, with a well-muscled body structure. As to what health is concerned, there may be issues regarding ear infections or damage, since its ears are big, thus a lot more sensitive.
Because of its origins, it has a very active personality and needs constant exercise; it does not really matter what kind of activities it is involved in (long walks, running, sports, games), as long as they require physical effort. It can adapt to apartment living conditions if it is regularly exercised, but a house with a yard is the perfect environment for this breed.
Having a lot of energy and well developed instincts, the Bracco Italiano is usually bred for tracking, retrieving, pointing, hunting and so on, but it can also be a great pet, being a close companion and forming strong bonds with the family; it can get along with other pets as well, and it can adapt to both country and city life. Very energetic by nature, the Bracco likes to play with the family one of its favorite activities is swimming. Though it matures relatively slow (being a puppy for over 3 years), it is an intelligent, obedient dog and a fast learner, which makes it easy to train.
Despite its gundog characteristics, this dog is gentle by nature, sensitive and affectionate towards its owners. Though independent, it is a faithful and obedient pet; it will protect its family by all means, showing unconditional love towards the members. Being calm and understanding, it also gets along very well with children.
Very active and intelligent, obedient and cute, an Italian Pointer can make the perfect pet. Loyal and affectionate, the Bracco Italiano is a gentle dog that has the right instincts to protect the family and, at the same time, love its owners with all its being.
