The Dutch Shepherd

The Ultimate Survivor

The Dutch Shepherd Dog is one fascinating breed whose main function was to watch the herds in the Dutch country side. This dog is almost all a shepherd or a farmer needs to keep their herds safe. It is a versatile dog that easily adapts to the difficult conditions of a shepherd dogs life: dangerous areas, rough terrains or new situations.

Of Dutch origin, this shepherd dog proved to have amazing qualities that could be used even after the sheep flocks were no longer common around 1900s, due to modern farming and all the changes that the development of new technologies involve. Therefore, this has proven to be suitable for training in order to become a police dog, a tracking dog or a guide dog for blind people. Even if this is a rare breed today, it is a true survivor due to the way it can adapt to new situations and conditions.

Appearance
As far as the coat is concerned, it is common to find this dog in three varieties:
Long, straight and harsh hair
Short, hard hair
Wired, harsh hair.

No matter the type of hair, the color will always be gold or silver brindle, or brindle with dark stripes. Professionals say that other markings on various parts of the body will not make the dog eligible for a perfect authentic dog of this breed.

The Dutch Shepherd Dog has a firm body. Its head is structured perfectly for the dog's original function, with strong teeth with a scissor bite. The Dutch Shepherd is well-proportioned and well muscled. Temperament
This breed has always proven to be intelligent and have a lively temperament. The Dutch Shepherd has all the necessary qualities for a watch dog. It is active and reliable, extremely loyal and obedient to his owner, so you will work very well together.

Any tasks are carried out successfully, and the dog will not be aggressive or shy. Even if it has a strong personality and fears nothing and nobody, it will make a really great family dog. However, it will need a firm owner who can control it, without destroying its personality. It gets attached to its territory and is always very energetic.

Owners need to know that these dogs are highly competent, agile and obedient, but they have to be well trained in order to have a good relationship with them.

Living Conditions
Even if it is a dog that loves running around large spaces, the Dutch Shepherd will do fine in a large apartment, too. The essential condition is that the pet is exercised enough - this means both physically and mentally. It needs to be kept in good shape, and also to be challenged to play. A daily walk is absolutely necessary. Take good care of your dog and you will have it around for 12 or 15 years.

Your Dutch Shepherd Dog will only need your love and affection to be happy and, most of all, to make you and your family happy.
