Continental Toy Spaniel

The Dog with the Face of a Butterfly

The Continental Toy Spaniel is another dog breed developed from the Spaniel type. It refers to a dog that has a face amazingly similar to the shape of a butterfly; this is the reason for which in France, this dog breed is known as "The Papillon" (papillon is the French term for butterfly). A Papillon with dropped ears is named a Phalene, which is another French word, this time signifying a moth.

Origin
As imagined, the Continental Toy Spaniel originates from Spain, but the breed was perfected by the French. During the times when Kings ruled in France, this type of dog was a favorite at the French court.

Physical features
We already said that the face of such dog is similar to a butterfly, because of its long and fringed hair on the ears. But let us mention some other characteristics of the Papillons: large ears (which can be either erect or dropped, with rounded tips), teeth meeting in a scissors bite, long tail, round eyes with thin black rims, short muzzle and straight, fine and single-layered coat. Speaking of the Papillons coat, it is white with patches of any color. Regarding their weight, males reach around 10 pounds, while females, around 9 pounds. The height of a dog like this is 8-11 inches, regardless of gender.

Temperament
The temperament of this dog breed is friendly, happy and adventurous. These dogs are playful and amusing, silent and steady. They might resent outsiders and be very possessive with their masters, though.

Training
Being such a friendly dog, the Papillon does not require very strong training. Still, like most dogs, it has to be taught to listen to a single person or a family, in case it is raised as a family dog. This type of dog is noted for its ability to learn commands, in some cases not that usual to other canines. Papillons can be taught to do many jobs, as required by their human companions. They can be trained to eat from a certain bowl, to escape from a yard, and even to steal someone's food, although for this final task, they usually do not actually require to be trained, since this is in their blood.

Health
These dogs do not present major health concerns, although seizures and dental problems can occur. They use and generate a large amount of energy, their heart and lungs being a bit oversized compared to their normal everyday needs; this happens because this type of dog is frequently encountered in situations where their metabolism works at its maximum, this is why their heart and lungs have to function at full capacity too.

Life expectancy
This dog can reach the amazing age of 16 years, which is rarely encountered in case of very active animals.

Conclusion
The Continental Toy Spaniel is perfect for small children, being one of the most social dogs around, and also for those who require a loyal friend, with a high ability of adjusting to human housholds.
