Dutch Smoushond

A Happy, Affectionate and Extremely Talented Dog

Also known as Hollandse Smoushond, the Dutch Smoushond is a small terrier type of dog originating in the Netherlands. This breed is extremely interesting to what its evolution along the years is concerned.

Its appearance and behavior suggests that the dog has descended from the Yellow German Schnauzer. Still unknown outside its country of origin, this breed is used to rid the stables of rats and it will be found sitting beside coachmen as a wonderful companion.

Once very popular among people and referred to as 'a Gentleman's companion', the breed nearly became extinct during and after World War II, but was revived through the efforts of a Mrs. H.M. Barman. The breed club is trying to build up the breed, and thus the Smoushond specimens are not sold outside of Netherlands because the dogs are still low in numbers.

The “Gentlemans Stabledog” is a rough, double coated, lively, active, agile and friendly dog. It has a square-like shape and well-muscled body. The dog can weigh up to 10 kg and measure 43 cm at the withers. It has a unique, broad and short head with slightly rounded forehead. Its moderate length muzzle has full, strong jaws and a broad, black nose. Its large, round and dark eyes have a lively and friendly expression. The small and triangular drop ears are set high on the head. The neck is short and muscular. The Fore and hind quarters are moderately angulated.

The body gives the impression of sturdiness, due to the broad, strong back, deep and broad chest with well sprung ribs and slightly arched loin. The tail is short and undocked. The body is covered with wiry, harsh coat that comes in all shades of yellow.

Some owners prefer to not brush the coat in order to maintain its shaggy appearance. Due to the fact that the hair plucking allows the growing of new hair, the coat of the dog needs to be hand plucked at least twice a year by a groomer - or the owner himself can learn the ropes of plucking the coat by hand. However, know that this process requires quite some patience both from you and your dog.

The Dutch Smoushond is a friendly dog, and this makes it a great companion. They are not aggressive to strangers, so they may not make the perfect guardians, if this is what you are looking for. They are highly energetic, they like to play a lot and they will amaze you with all their talents. You will notice that their ultimate goal is to please the owner. This dog is also great with children and it will surely get along with other pets around the house.

As far as training is concerned, this should not be difficult at all. However, all the commands should be firm and consistent, so that the dog understands this is not a game.

The Dutch Smoushond dog's lively and cheerful personality is what you need to have a joyful atmosphere around every day.
