English Springer Spaniel

A Hunting Dog With a “Family Mode” Switch

The English Springer Spaniel was bred to be a bird dog or a gun dog to spring game in the field, and it was named after that particular activity. The Spaniel's origin country is unknown, but it probably came from Spain. In the late 1880s, in England, the breed was divided into two groups according to weight. The dogs weighing up to 12 kilograms were called Cocker Spaniel, and the ones weighing around 23 kilograms were called Field Spaniels or English Springers.

The breed that we know today is divided into two lines: The Field Trial Springers and The Show Springers. These two are different in weight and coat style. The Show Springers are bred especially for shows, of course. They have longer coats and weigh more. The Field Trial Springers are bred for their speed, endurance, working ability and keen smell. But both can be easily trained to hunt.

The English Springer Spaniel is people-oriented. If isolated or left alone for too long, it gets bored and starts barking for no reason, digs holes in the garden or chews on your shoes or furniture. These dogs can adapt to any situation, whether it is child's play or handling strangers. They are comfortable around other pets and greet strangers with warmth. But just because they are humble, loving dogs, does not mean they will not sound the alarm if danger is near.

They are hunting dogs, but can easily adapt to apartments or big-city situations. Because they are hunting dogs, they require a lot of outdoor exercise. But if you take your dog to an area without fences, always have a leash, or else it may run off to hunt on its own.

They like to hunt, but they do not like to guard. Do not be under the impression that this kind of dog will guard your house. They will occasionally bark at strangers coming at your house, but they are affectionate, gentle dogs, and will immediately calm down and wait to be petted. They expect even strangers to give them attention.

The English Springer is a medium-size dog with typical spaniel expressions and long ears. It has medium-length, thick coat that turns into feathering on the ears, chest, abdomen and legs. On the face, they have a clearly-marked white spot. The most common color patterns are black and white or liver and white. The head is strong without seeming heavy. The eyes are medium-size and somewhat sunken, giving off a friendly and loving expression. Their floppy ears block air circulation, so you need to check them periodically and keep them clean to avoid any ear infections, which is pretty common among this breed.

The English Springer Spaniel has been a long time favorite among sportsmen, whether it is hunting or trail walking, but has also been a favorite family dog; it is a fun dog that will keep you happy and joyful, due to its positive, sweet disposition and willingness to please.
