The Estrela Mountain Dog, otherwise known as the Portuguese Mountain Dog, is the oldest breed in Portugal used as working dog mainly for guarding herds of livestock. This ancient breed is as pure as it can get, since crossbreeding was almost impossible given the seclusion of the Iberian Peninsula.



Highly appreciated by shepherds, thanks to its high intelligence and strong personality, this fairly large breed can be longhaired or short-haired. These dogs are highly protective of their families, homes and surroundings, which they rightfully consider to be theirs, and therefore, it is their duty to watch over them and chase away any strangers. This dog is a companionship dog, a watchdog and a working dog an eclectic breed.

The Estrela Mountain Dog is the missing part of any family - children and Estrela dogs are a match made in heaven, because they will protect them and play with them at the same time. This well-mannered and docile breed, despite its quite large size, has a lot of vitality and great agility and loves to play around with its family members. However, it does not require a lot of space - a small house being quite enough, provided that the yard is fenced.

This gentle large dog, however, needs a responsible owner because, by its nature, it is an independent dog which requires to be socialized properly. It is advised to be walked on a leash and it needs only moderate exercise. This pastoral dog gets along with other dog breeds, but it tends to be more assertive than the other dogs in the house. Also, even an adult dog can be trained to accept cats in its family.

In terms of health, this breed is generally resistant to diseases, but it is predisposed to hip dysplasia due to its large size. As far as grooming is concerned, this breed is low maintenance and weekly brushing of its coat will keep it clean. Also, this faithful breed can adapt easily to cold and hot weather alike.

Males weigh more (88 to 110 pounds) than females (66 to 88 pounds), but they are equally protective of their families. These dogs are excellent family dogs, vigilant guardians and agile farm dogs. Being a large dog, its bark is quite powerful. This breed is considered one of the best guard dogs in the world, as nothing slips by it's watchful eye. When it senses a menace impending on its protected territory, it will turn aggressive towards the strangers approaching its premises and will even sacrifice its life to protect its terf. These dogs are very calm and peaceful as long as their home security is not threatened, because all the saved up energy will be then put to the best use. They are particularly attached to children and will attack if they feel a child is in danger. Obedience training and socialization are important.

At a first glance, their large and sturdy appearance looks fierce, but if you decide to adopt an Estrela Mountain Dog, you will discover its giant, affectionate heart and that nothing will stop this courageous and loyal dog from protecting its family.
