The Clumber Spaniel - The Perfect Mix Between Cuteness and Intelligence

Cute, fluffy, funny, gentle, the Clumber Spaniel is the favorite pet of many, and for good reasons. It is sweet, docile and pleasant. Even if one would think so due to its sweet nature, this breed the does not lack intelligence. Plus these are affectionate and well-behaved dogs.

Very active when puppies, these dogs tend to become much calmer towards their maturity. This does not mean that they are bland dogs, but they will play mostly when challenged. And they will be great indoor pets. They are not heavy barkers, and can be trusted with children. They are wise and calm, trustworthy when it comes to strangers. Even though they might seem lazy, they are full of enthusiasm for working and playing.

The Clumber Spaniel is one of the original breeds that have been registered by the AKC, and is unique among other spaniels. The most common belief is that the breed originated in France in the 18-th century. Its ancestors are the Basset Hound and the Alpine Spaniel. It has been known for its subtle stile of hunting.

With a massive head and short legs, this breed possesses wide chest and straight front legs. They have cute hanging ears. Their coat is dense, making them resistant to low temperatures. Moreover, it is also very soft to touch.

These are very sensitive dogs, and do not respond to harsh discipline. Instead, they adapt very well to a calm, assertive voice, and they need an owner who can communicate the rules well. They have a great memory and love to please their master. They also love hunting, even though this is not one of the main features of the breed. They love to chew, so toys are a must when choosing this breed as a pet.

They get along well with not only other dogs, but also cats and various household animals due to their calm, less competitive nature.

Their height is between 16 and 20 inches and the weight varies from 55 to 85 pounds. Their life expectancy is between 10 and 12 years, but can go further.

Clumber Spaniels love exercising; they should not skip their daily walks, even if they sometimes can look sleepy. They enjoy long moderate walks, but do not fit as a jogging partner. They love playing fetch. They are also very good swimmers, but do not like hot temperatures. This breed loves children and playing with them, coping great with the childs abundant energy. When it comes to people they are attached to, they are highly protective.

Among the health problems for this breed are cataracts, hip dysplasia or dry eyes. Some of these dogs often develop an irritation of the ear, but there are lotions to prevent and cure this issue. They tend to snore and drool. Some of them develop skin allergies. They are prone to becoming overweight, so you should keep your pet well exercised and avoid overfeeding.

This is an ideal pet due to its will to please, which makes it one of the most altruistic dogs. And, of course, it is extremely fun to be around. The intelligence and loyalty of the Clumber Spaniel will keep the owner challenged and happy at all times.
