The Klein Poodle, also known as the Moyen Poodle or Caniche, is a dog breed known for its distinct coat. Although its origin will always remain a mystery, France is the one who had the guts to claim it. It is believed that the Germans initially developed this breed, this is why the name remained “Klein” which means small. However, it has charmed the French people, who transformed it in a dog of the aristocracy and fashion.



The Klein Poodle is a medium-sized dog with an astonishing aspect. Poodles are divided into 3 official breeds: Toy, Miniature and Standard Poodle. The Standard Poodle is the most appreciated one, because it is the biggest. The Caniche is standing between the Miniature and Standard Poodle, but it is not recognized by AKC.

This beautiful dog has a grand appearance. Usually, you do not see much of its body because of the curly coat, but when groomed, is has a square body. Its head is normal in size, with a rounded skull. Its front head is wide and its eyes are round and dark. The muzzle is long and delicate with a generous nose and wide nostrils. The ears are set low on the head and moderately long and floppy.

The neck is long and graceful, the back is slightly curved and the chest is broad. The legs are long and muscular and the tail is moderately long and carried high. The coat is its strong point, because is soft, dense and curly. It was made to protect it when swimming. Because of its long hair, you can actually give it any shape you want. The color of the coat can be black, blue, gray, cream, apricot, red, white, brown or café au lait. It has no markings or patches. This dog stands between 15 and 20 inches (38 to 50 cm) tall and weighs for about 20 to 30 pounds (9 to 13 kg).

The Caniche is among the most intelligent dogs. Extremely bright and playful, it is perfect for the ones who have the time to teach it all sorts of tricks. It has a lot of energy and vivacity that will cheer up any person. Nevertheless, it needs to be busy all the time. Because of its intelligence, it requires different activities, exercises and games. Therefore, keep in mind that it needs daily exercises, long walks and as much activities as it can. Training and socialization are very important for this dog, because, this way, it will grow up well-mannered and obedient. It is good natured and sensible, so it is perfect for your children. It is also a good watchdog. It does best in houses with a yard, but it can manage to live in an apartment.

Grooming is not as complicated as it seems it needs to be bathed and trimmed regularly, every six weeks. It can live for about 15 years.
