The Kelb Tal-Fenek A Mystical and a Versatile Hound

The Kelb Tal-Fenek is a dog breed from Malta. It is an ancient breed that might have come from Egypt. That is the reason why it is also known as the Pharaoh Hound. In Maltese, its name means “rabbit hound”. This dog was used as a watchdog or to chase small prey. It is a combination of scent hound and sight hound.

The Kelb Tal-Fenek is an athletic dog with an elegant appearance. Its fine lines and delicate curves make us truly believe it is an authentic pharaoh. This medium-sized dog has a slender body that expresses both strength and agility. Its head is normal in size and the skull is round. The forehead is wide and high. The skin forms delicate wrinkles between the ears. The stop is deep, but smooth and the muzzle is elongated and narrow. The eyes are small, curious and light in color. It has brownish-pink nose and lips.

The erect ears are similar to the ones of the rabbit - they are large and pricked. The neck is long and supple and the body is slim, but curvy. The back is long and softly arched and the chest is broad and deep. The legs are not too long, but slim and muscular. The tail is narrow and long. It is usually carried low. The coat is short and fine. The color of the fur is a variety of red shades. The most common coat color is light brown. It can also have white touches on the muzzle, neck or chest.

There are slight differences between genders. They generally are about 21 to 25 inches (53 to 63 cm) and they weigh 45 to 55 pounds (20 to 25 kg).

This graceful dog is a quiet hound. It is focused when working, but it can also be playful and loyal to its owner. It loves to chase small animals, so keep it on the leash when outdoors. Also, it is not a good idea to keep another small pet, unless it grows up with it. It is very well-mannered, so you will not have any problem when you keep it indoors. Make sure you offer it enough activities, because it is a very energetic hound that needs to move to stay in shape.

This dog can adapt to city life and can live in an apartment as long as you provide it with enough physical exercise. A dynamic life means a healthy dog. Also, keep in mind that training is necessary, due to its hunter instincts.

Socialize it from an early stage otherwise, it tends to become shy and anxious. It needs long, daily walks and regular exercises. It is best with older children and energetic families.

This dog needs little grooming. It must be brushed from time to time to remove the dead hair. It has not that particular doggy odor. It is very healthy, but can be sensitive to medicines and insecticides.
