The Kanni An Agile Hunter and a Tender Companion

The Kanni is a breed of dogs from India. It is found in the region of Tamil Nadu and it is used for hunting. The name of the dog means “maiden” and is closely related to their custom - if a girl wanted to marry, the dog would be a present for the future groom. It is a rare breed.

The Kanni is a large, supple dog with a gracious appearance. Its head is small and delicate, with a flat skull. The stop is almost absent and the transition from the head to the muzzle is incredibly smooth. The forehead is normal in size, with prominent eyebrows. The eyes have an almond shape and are dark in color. The muzzle is elongated and beautifully pointed. The nose is always black and has wide nostrils. The drop ears are set low on the head. The neck is long, thick and muscular. The back is generously curved and the chest is broad and deep. Its waist looks very fragile. The legs are long and muscular. The tail is normal in size, but thin and slightly curled over its back.

Its coat is short, smooth and glossy. The color of the coat is generally black with tan touches on the muzzle, eyebrows, chest and feet. But there are other examples of cream dogs which are named “Paalakanni”. The dog is about 25 inches tall. The females are slightly smaller.

This slender dog is quite different than the others, because it is not allowed to live on the streets or as a pet. It is kept for hunting by families who are about to marry their daughter. The body of the Kannis is so slim because they would eat meat once a week. In general, they eat milk, corn and “Ragi” porridge. As a hunter, it is very focused and eager to chase deer to please its master. Even if it is shy, it will always protect its family. This humble dog does not expect anything in return from its owner. It is always pretty silent and barks rarely. It becomes faithful, loyal and devoted to its family. Due to its intelligence, it can be trained easily. Its gentle nature makes it suitable for children. It does great as a pet, because of its delicate, well-mannered character. Its necessities are simple and small in number. It will listen to its master and become a loyal partner. When outdoors, it needs space to run and hunt, but, indoors, it is calm and still. It does not need large space when indoors.

It is not a sophisticated dog and its needs are minimal. The coat must be brushed from time to time to remove the dead hair. The ears must be kept clean to prevent infections. It can live for about 10 years. Due to its diet, it is healthy and agile.

The Kanni is an energetic hunter, but a gentle soul that needs care and attention from a reliable family.
