The Manchester Terrier has its origins in 19th century England. Developed by crossing a Whipped to a cross bred terrier, this dog was extremely popular in the sport of rat killing until being outlawed with the formation of the Kennel Club. Because of its small size and agile reflexes, this dog was highly efficient in chasing and catching rats that were infesting the poorly sanitized England during the 1800s.
This agile and powerful dog has a smooth, compact and muscular body and an arched topline. Its gait is effortless and free. The tight skinned head is long and narrow, with a light stop visible from the side. The V shaped years are kept naturally in a semi erect position. The small dark eyes have a keen and alert expression. The coat is smooth, short and dense and is black and tan.
This dog was built for chasing and catching small rodents. Its constitution is athletic, and its agile and energetic style needs constant exercise, otherwise it can go bored and be destructive around the house. This dog does extremely well in agility competitions or in work trials. The dogs curious and independent nature is characteristic to terrier type dogs, which is why it is always on a lookout for adventure.
Alert and always willing to protect the owner and its belongings, this dog makes for an excellent watch dog. High spirited and very intelligent, these cunning dogs are very good at training, responding well to positive reinforcements and to commands, learning tricks with ease. Because of their energetic nature, proper training and exercise is needed in order to prevent them from excessive digging and barking around the house.
Very loyal and devoted to its master, the Manchester Terrier is always willing to please its owner, and will go to great extends in order to get attention. It enjoys being around people, and early socialization will greatly benefit this dog. Proper caution should be taken with small non canine animals, as they might awake the dogs strong natural instincts.
Thanks to its small size, this breed is fit to live in an apartment. Although very active indoor, they benefit from a small yard, allowing them to spend their energy running. Any rodents lurking around will quickly disappear if this dog is present. Because of its short coat, this is better off in warmer climates.
Daily exercise is recommended, and long walks on a leash. The dog should also have the chance to run free, and it can keep a fast speed for extended periods of time. As this dog loves to run, and has the instinct to chase, it should not be left off the leash if other small animals are present.
An affectionate and loving dog, it needs to be physically close to its family, and craves for attention from its owners. It also loves to sleep besides its favorite member of the family. Adopting such a dog will greatly benefit anyone, especially if there are small children who love to interact with animals and play with them. A Manchester Terrier is a great choice for anyone wishing for a dog that is both affectionate and active.
