The Hellenikos Ichnilatis is a breed of dog originating in Greece. It is a scenthound used to chase hares. This breed is known from ancient times and has become quite rare. Due to its living conditions in a remote region, the breed remained mostly pure.



The Hellenikos Ichnilatis is a medium-sized dog with a well balanced constitution. The fine shapes and the supple construction make it an elegant dog. The head is round and beautifully shaped into a semicircle. The muzzle is elongated and narrow. The eyes have an almond shape and are dark. They gave an intelligent and bright look. The nose is fairly arched and always black. The ears are long, floppy, but not heavy. The neck is fairly thick, not too long, but solid. The back is arched and long and the chest is wide and deep. The waist is very slim and the legs are delicate, but robust. The tail is long, narrow and is carried low. Its slender body was modeled by the rough conditions from the mountains. Its athletic conformation is a testimony of usefulness and integrity. The coat of this dog is short, dense and hard to the touch. The colour is usually only black with tan markings on the head, muzzle, chest and legs.

The differences between the genders are minor. The females tend to be more delicate in appearance. In general, their average height is from 18 to 22 inches (45 to 55 cm) and their weight is from 38 to 44 pounds (17- 20 kg).

This brave dog is excellent as a hunter. It is very passionate when hunting, but remains obedient and restricted when needed. This working dog is very useful and is considered a mine of gold in ones farm. Because is so courageous, it is kept to protect the hunters or families from wild boars or other wild animals. Luckily, this dog is very friendly and playful and would do great as a pet. It is good natured and suitable for families with older children. The owner must be very firm, but calm. He must present pack leader skills to properly guide this hound. Early training is necessary for it to grow healthy and obedient. It matures quite slowly, so the owner must have a little patience and understanding. This hunter needs a lot of space and rigorous physical exercises. It is convenient for both the dog and the owner to keep it in a large yard or farm and to let it hunt whenever it wants. This dog is very energetic and requires a massive amount of exercises.

This dog is not only beautiful, but it is also extremely healthy. It does not present any health concerns. The grooming is a pleasure, due to the dogs very short hair. A little brushing and washing from time to time would be enough. Pay attention to the ears, because they must be kept clean and dry. This dog lives for about 11 years.

The Hellenikos Ichnilatis is a bright dog who impatiently expects a real hunter or energetic family to offer it diverse activities and shelter.
