The Pyrenean Mastiff A Massive Force Embodied in a Loving Dog

Strength, power, agility and protection are the words that describe best the Pyrenean Mastiff. This giant breed can inspire fear only by looking at you. This breed of Molosser type is quite ancient. The dogs were brought to Spain by the Phoenicians and they were used to protect the sheep for wolves, bears and other dangerous things. Nowadays, they are used as guard dogs for farms and houses. The breed is pretty rare even in its country.

The Pyrenean Mastiff is a great dog with an elegant appearance. This giant may seem heavy, but, in fact, it is light on its feet. Its gait is airy, but firm and its movements are smooth. Its head is massive, with a slightly domed skull. Its forehead is rather short and its stop is deep and the muzzle is the same size as the head. The almond shaped eyes are usually brown and the nose is always black. The ears are normal in size and floppy. Although it is massive, its lines are lean. The neck is thick and strong and the body is slightly arched. The chest is broad and deep and the legs are muscular. The tail is long and furry.

The coat is extremely dense and coarse to the touch. The hair is pretty long, about 9 cm. The hair is longer on the neck, shoulders and tail. The color of the coat is predominantly white, but it has golden, black or gray markings. The females are usually smaller, but, generally, they are 28.5 to 34 inches tall (72 to 86 cm) and weigh 120 to 175 pounds (54 to 80 kg).

This giant dog is a true guardian. It is extremely loyal and gentle with children. Although it may sound unusual, this is not an aggressive breed. It prefers to bark and menace than attack. It is territorial, but it can understand when it needs to let go. Early training is required. Also, you should socialize the pups so as to be familiar with people and other animals. The owner should be firm in his or her commands and must develop pack leader skills.

It needs to stay close to the people, it loves the human companionship and it cannot wait to take care of children. However, it is suitable for older kids, because of its size. It is wary with strangers and does not trust them. This breed rarely barks, so, when it does, it means that something important happened. The dog should stay in a fenced area, but not in an apartment. It needs to roam, observe and sniff the surroundings. It requires daily walks, but it is not so active and energetic outdoors.

Grooming is not complicated, but it can take a while because of the dogs size. The dog needs to be brushed regularly and washed only when necessary. It can live up to 10 years.

The Pyrenean Mastiff is a grand dog that needs a loving family and a comfy shelter.
