The Sealydale Terrier is a relatively new breed, created in the 20th century, somewhere between the 1940s and the 1950s. It was born in South Africa as a result of the crossing between the Sealyham Terrier and the Airedale Terrier. The dogs are used as a companion for the family and are sometimes linked to the Jack Russell Terrier.
The Sealydale Terrier is a small, robust dog, with short legs. It can have a height ranging from 30 to 33 centimeters and a weight falling between 8 and 10 kilos, with the males being a little larger and heavier that the females. The chest is deep and the limbs are muscular. The bodys length is usually larger than the height.
They have a rectangular skull, with a black nose, oval shaped eyes with a dark coloration and V-shaped ears that are hanging down, close to the dogs cheek. The jaws meet in a scissors bite. The tail is carried high and it used to be docked until the procedure became illegal.
The dogs coat is long and slightly rough. It has a double laired coat, with a thick undercoat and a rough, longer outer layer. The most common color is white. Sometimes the coat may have fawn, black, biscuit or tan markings on the body and head.
Regular brushing and bathing will do the trick when it comes to grooming, and a trimming once in a while will make the dog look excellent.
These are active and energetic dogs, that need to have regular, daily walks in order to stay in shape. Although the playing routine can provide all the exercise needed, the walks cannot be left aside as behavioral problems may occur.
Although they are not as loud as a normal terrier, they are very happy and can make a joyful companion. They are also good watchdogs, as they are always aware of any intruder.
Training doesnt require any special techniques, but the dog must be properly rewarded with snacks and cheers. They will always be eager to please and learn new tricks.
They are good with children as well as with other dogs or non-canine pets.
Being a relatively new breed, there arent any documented health issues, but a regular visit to a veterinarian is advisable in order to have a happy, healthy pet.
Small in size, they make great indoor canines, as long as they get all the attention and exercise that they need. If the dog lacks affection will easily became bored and other conditions such as Small Dog Syndrome can occur, making the dog more moody and aggressive even towards its owner.
Like most of the terriers, this specific breed has a long life expectancy, hovering around 12 to 15 years.
