- What is Pilocarpine used for?
Pilocarpine is a miotic agent used in the treatment of canine primary glaucoma only.
- How Pilocarpine should be used?
Pilocarpine is not FDA approved for use in veterinary medicine; however, it is a commonly accepted practice to use this medication in dogs. The usual dose in dogs is one drop in the affected eye(s) 3 times a day.
- What are the side effects?
Pilocarpine can cause local irritation when first used. Pilocarpine may cause systemic effects including vomiting, diarrhea and increased salivation.
- What special precautions are there?
Pilocarpine should not be used in secondary glaucoma. Wash hands before administering eye drops. Do not touch the dropper tip to the skin or eye.
- In the event of overdose?
Contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room. Symptoms of overdose that may occur include vomiting, diarrhea and increased salivation.
- How should I store Pilocarpine?
Store this medication at room temperature. Keep out of the reach of children or pets.
