Adopt a American Pit Bull Terrier / Catahoula Leopard Dog / Mixed (medium coat)
Sailor the Dog needs a home
Please only apply if you have vet history and plan to give a loving forever home. Read all below before applying. Our rescue is foster based so we know more of the animals wants to help match them with a family. Once they are adopted it helps open space to save another life.
- Female around 5 months old.
- Super sweet can seem a little shy at times.
- Breed UNKNOWN. She looks just like our rescue mascot (a pitbull) because of her coloring and eyes, but her face is longer, her fur is coming in thick and wavy at the back and tail, and she seems pretty small.
- Size potential unknown though we think she will stay on the medium size.
- Intake date: Jan 9, 2018 was 17lbs on intake, is currently 25lbs.
- fenced yard required but she is to be an inside dog.
- Housetraining: You have to let her outside regularly to establish a pottying routine. If I don't pay attention she will potty inside. If i pay attention, she does not. It's my job and will be her owners job to pay attention and teach her. During the night she does not potty until its time to get up and we let her outside.
History: Sailor was at one of our local shelters that has to euthanize for space. She was found with demodectic mange (non-contagious). It was passed down from her mother. Mites the cover the skin causing hair loss, very itchy to them and can cause them to bleed when they scratch. It is cured easily. Sailors is going away thanks to the flea/tick pill bravecto that lasts for 3 months, it also treats mites! Volunteers from the shelter networked Sailor and we instantly fell in love as she looks a lot like our rescues mascot Grace. We took her under the rescue and she is being fostered with the mascot. Her fur is still coming back in as the mange is clearing up.
About Sailor: Sailor loves to sleep in bed at night. She will sleep all through the night and generally doesn't get up unless we do, then we bring her straight outside to go potty. She goes into her kennel when we are not home. You generally have to catch her to lead or bring her to the kennel, then she goes right in. Every now and then she will surprise us and go in when told. She loves playing with the other dogs! She is around a 5 year old child and does great. (IF YOU have children or even younger children, always understand a puppy must be taught to be polite. They aren't born "child friendly" they learn as they grow. Children must be respectful to them if you want to see the same respect back.)
Sailor didn't know what toys were when we rescued her. She had to learn and now she loves them! I also think she will love balls but we cannot have them in our home due to our personal dogs being hogs! Sailor is currently living with a pitbull, rottweiler, and a senior cocker spaniel. She loves playing with her friends and she has learned to respect the seniors space. She is still scared of our large water dish that is metal. She would prefer a plastic water bowl I assume so I offer her that when she is too chicken to go to the metal one. She eats out of a metal bowl though haha!
Sailor hasn't been leashed trained yet but I will work on it with her. She wears a collar and clothes just fine. I think she will catch on quickly. Right now she goes out the back door to play in the fenced yard. A fenced yard will be required for her as she loves it and has lots of puppy energy. Sailor likes socks. So if you leave any laying around she may carry them around in her mouth haha! Typical puppy that has to be watched.
Sailor can be shy with some things but she has really learned a lot how to come out of her shell. I imagine in a new home she will take some time to come around then she will bond to her owners just like she has with our family. When she first came here she stayed glued to us until she got to know our dogs. Now she goes about playing and resting all day. She enjoys cuddling by us or our dogs.
She is truly SUCH a doll. When she gets excited she will wiggle her little body. It's the cutest.
Requirements: Sailor is to be an indoors dog only. She is not to be left outside unattended. Fenced yard. Kept on monthly heartworm prevention like any other dog. Understanding that she is a puppy. Lots of love!
We want to find a family that will keep in touch with us and send pictures and updates. She is special just like our other rescue babies.
Vetting:
Up to date on vaccinations and rabies vaccine. (Will need next puppy shot series in a few weeks. We would prefer her to have another set as she is younger) Sailor will be spayed prior to adoption. Had a fecal which showed hookworms so she was treated. Microchipped
(that fee is included in adoption donation fee. It is a one time fee so no yearly expenses. We will register pet on our end then you will check your email and check the registration. From there you will get reminders to update your information. Easy peasy) Sailor is too young to be heartworm tested yet as they take 6 months to mature and she is under 6 months of age. She was started on monthly heartguard for heartworm prevention. She is also on the 3 month flea/tick pill called Bravecto to help clear her skin up. It is required that any potential adopters keep the pets on monthly heartworm prevention to keep them safe.
ADOPTION: Sailor has a $150 adoption donation which in NO way covers how much we spend on vetting expense and care. The donation goes back into the 501c3 non profit rescue to help us so that we can continue saving other lives. To apply: #1.
