To say Pepe had a hard former life is an understatement. We first met him after his former owners, a young couple who got caught up in drug addiction, asked us to help with his needed emergency vet care.

Because his owners would allow him and their other dogs to roam freely all over town, Pepe was eventually struck by a car and suffered a broken right rear leg. While he desperately need to be seen by a vet, the couple didn't have the funds to cover his needs. We gladly helped and Pepe received the vet care he needed. Over the next 1 1/2 years, we begged this couple to surrender their dogs to us because they couldn't even afford to buy dog food for them. SoCo actually supplied the couple with dog food to feed their dogs for well over a year. Over that time span Pepe was struck by a vehicle a second time (with no serious injuries) and at least one of their other dogs was killed after being hit by a car. Eventually we were able to convince the couple's family to surrender the dogs to us after the couple vacated the property and left all their dogs, including 15 puppies, at the property.

Pepe will occasionally favor his once-broken leg, most likely due to some arthridis setting in after his accidents. He still gets around very well and typically doesn't have any limp, just primarily when it gets cold. Pepe also became infected with heart worms since his owners never provided him with preventatives but thanks to a SoCo supporter, Pepe was able to receive his treatments and completed the process in Jan, 2018. Pepe is now living a healthier, happier life and getting the love and attention that he needs. 

Through it all Pepe has remained the friendly, wonderful fellow that he is today. He loves people and gets along with most other dogs but does tend to be protective over his food with other dogs, most likely from the days of having very little to eat. He's had some house training and will normally wait to potty until he's out of his kennel. He walks well on a leash, travels excellently in a vehicle and is even crate trained. He is such a sweet, gentle soul and would make a great companion to just about any family.
