Adopt a Domestic Short Hair

Domestic Short Hair Cat

Searcher the Cat needs a home

Searcher got her name because earlier the same day she was found, she was seen pacing an alley, looking all around, into yards, either for someone or some place of safety. She may have been lost, dumped or put out, its hard to say. Her paw pads were very tough and calloused when she was found, a common hallmark of a cat that has been living outdoors. She had no microchip, no collar, but was spayed and is so very affectionate with people- most of all she likes to sleep on her foster mom at night and sit on laps. When she is happy on a lap she is a drooler too! Her foster mom loves this true sign of bliss and relaxation! Of course, she can’t tell us what happened to her or where she came from, but it’s not necessary, because the warmth, love and affection she has for people says it all. She has not been tested with dogs but gets along fine with other cats- she doesn't seek them out and is independent but doesn't mind having other cats around. She is low key and quiet and would probably do best in a calmer home with older children or adults only.

Searchers Story: This sweet girl was found randomly one day as an experienced cat foster was taking out her recycling in St. Louis City. She approached and started talking right away. The woman told her to follow her into her yard for some food and she did just that. She was evidently extremely hungry and looked thin and hollow in the belly area. Searcher was brought inside right away and for the next 3 months she was at the veterinarians office a lot. We didn't know at the time Searcher had a broken pelvis but the woman did notice she had a very tender rear hip and small wounds over her body. She was guarding her left hip quite a bit and when investigated, it was realized she had an abscess ready to burst. After that abscess was treated we figured we had handled the situation and the injuries had resulted from an attack by another cat. When she went in the following week for spay they realized she was already spayed, so she must have had a family and a home at one point.
A week later, she had to go back to the vet again as she wasn't passing stool. At that point the veterinarian decided to take an x-ray and that is when they realized she had a broken pelvis. It is assumed (since both the abscess and injury to the pelvis are on the left side) that Searcher sustained some sort of blunt impact, likely from being struck by a vehicle. After her initial x-ray, the vet had hoped to medically manage her stool problems and since she was getting around, let her hip heal as is. However the vet realized the pelvis had further collapsed into the canal, causing further displacement of the acetabular region as well as the pelvic wing. The vet recommended immediate referral to a surgeon since the fracture was impinging on and potentially causing internal damage to the colon.
Searcher was in the hands of a veterinary orthopedic surgeon (at VSS in Ballwin, MO) who corrected the misalignment of her pelvis using plates and screws to correct and set the long oblique fracture (she sustained multiple fractures but this was the most serious) of the left ileal body. That surgery took place mid November 2016, and by early February 2017, she had made a full recovery with use of her affected leg.
