Hi there! My name is Happy and I'm a 53 pound, male, one-year-old terrier mix looking for my forever home.
My name is Happy Cow, or Vaca Feliz if you speak my native tongue. I'm a 53 pound male, two year-old terrier mix, though there may actually be some cow in my lineage (unconfirmed). I survived Hurricane Maria's 100 mph winds to make it here from Puerto Rico, and Lucky Dog Animal Rescue was the proverbial roll of paper towels tossed in my direction. The most important thing to know about me is my deep silly streak. I hope you don't mind me rolling all over your carpets, playing ball like I'm the Washington Nationals' starting shortstop, becoming your leg rest if you aren't giving me enough ear scratches, or waking you up in the morning with a gigantic slurp from my cow-sized tongue. I do it all without barking much at all, but I'm no cow-ard. I just prefer to let my actions do the talking.
I'm good with kids and other larger dogs, and I greet every new friend at the door with gentle hug and a vigorous tail wag. However, you definitely don't want me co-habitating with any small dogs, cats, squirrels, or Scabbers the Pet Rat. I will do fine sleeping in a crate, but let's be honest: you'll get a lot more love from me if you let me flop all over your furniture. I promise I'll keep the shedding to a minimum. I also adore long walks in the moooooo-nlight (get it?), I'm totally chill during long car rides, and I will be a kick-butt running partner when temperatures are above 10 degrees F.
All of this small talk and I haven't even told you about my appetite. See, I'm a total foodie. As in, if it's food, I'm all in! Dog food, table scraps, unattended items on the kitchen counter, and especially bananas-- the riper the better. They grow them back in PR-- it's a comfort food thing, OK? (I'll eat beef too. Weird, I know, but don't judge.) I'm also all in for non-food items: tissues, napkins, Irish Spring deodorant soap, and other items TBD. Thanks to my four stomachs, my intestines are pretty hardy. No vet trips yet! And anyway, it's like my Grandma Bessie used to say: "To err is human, but to forgive is bovine."
FOSTER UPDATE: Happy's full name on his records from Puerto Rico is actually Happy Cow, and he comes to that name in Spanish (Vaca Feliz). He is very smart and knows how to sit, walk on a leash, and use his crate. He loves car rides (and is very calm in the car). He is good with kids and dogs, but definitely not cats. His personality is laid back, calm and cuddly. We've only heard him make a bark once. He is a bit nervous of loud trucks and buses, and gives chase to bicycles (other than squirrels, those are the only things that have prompted leash pulling on walks). He does have some food guarding; and is an expert counter surfer and food snatcher, if given the opportunity. He prefers to sleep in his crate. He LOVES to give hugs and rest his head against you, and really is an all around sweetheart.
Like most shelter dogs, Happy may need a refresher on house training. He is likely crate trained.
The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and transportation to DC. If you are interested in adopting, please download our Adoption Questionnaire and email it to Kristen at [email protected] .
