Adopt a Yellow Labrador Retriever / Boxer / Mixed (short coat)

Yellow Labrador Retriever / Boxer / Mixed (short coat) Dog

Winston the Dog needs a home

Winston is a big teddy bear - soft, fun to play with, and very loveable. This boy is about one and a half years old, and 55 pounds of happy, eager-to-please, joy.  His breed mix is uncertain - maybe golden lab, boxer, and a dog with a very soft double coat.

Winston’s behavior is lab-like – sweet and playful. He is very gentle with his favorite dog friend who is less than half Winston’s size. It’s unknown how he would do with cats.

Winston is a very active boy. His favorite things are to play with other dogs, chase sticks and balls, chew sticks, play in water, and nap in a sunny spot. At night he likes to cuddle up next to you and put his head in your lap. In his new home Winston needs a dog to play with - a dog pal that is about Winston's size and enjoys vigorous play, like chase and wrestle and tug.

Winston seems to be very healthy. He has been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. One caution - with his double coat and relatively short snout, Winston can easily get overheated.

Winston is reliably housebroken.  He wants to please, which makes training easy and he seems to learn quickly. He knows how to come, sit, stay, lie down, drop, and he walks pretty well on a leash (pulling sometimes, biting the leash sometimes, and sometimes trying to play with a dog he is walking with). He doesn’t get on furniture without permission. He is comfortable using a dog door. When he is tired he goes to his bed and naps.  He is getting used to riding in the car, although he doesn’t love it (he has never gotten car sick). Winston is comfortable being touched. He can be petted while he is playing with a toy or chewing a treat. In his foster home he has been very gentle, sweet-natured, even-tempered, and relatively calm for a young dog.

Winston likes to chew but that has diminished as he has gotten older. He does sometimes resource guard his food bowl or a chew toy. He has done a little digging in the yard but stops immediately when distracted or corrected. He does not react to bicycles, motorcycles, or dogs barking at him when he is on a walk. He does bark at dogs that walk by him. Now he is learning that when dogs walk by he gets treats, so he is beginning to respond positively. With his eagerness to please, time and positive training should resolve any problem behaviors that arise. We can direct you to lots of good resources for help with training.

Winston is full of enthusiasm and affection, and is a joy to be around. He will thrive with people who can dedicate time, energy, patience, and lots of love to work with him on positive training and make sure he gets plenty of daily exercise. For the right person/s or family, Winston will be a truly fabulous forever friend.
