Adopt a Chihuahua (short coat)
Evelyn the Dog needs a home
Evelyn came here from the Stark pound where their vet had just removed all of her remaining teeth except two (her canines) and they were so bad that the infection had gone into her jaw, rotting away the very front of the bone completely; she also had advanced cataracts which limited her vision considerably, though she managed to get areound very capably in spite of the situation. Once she arrived, we also discovered that she was completely deaf as well.
We held our first ever crowd-sourcing campaign to raise money for her to have cataract surgery, which was done in late February. She can see again! However, a test that was done as part of her pre-testing for her cataract removal suggested that there may also be an issue with her retinas. Upon examination after her operation, the ophthalmologist was pleasantly surprised at how good her retinas looked. So, it remains unknown as to whether or not her sight will again deteriorate in the future due to problems with her retinas. But for now, we are just glad her vision is greatly improved from what it was when she arrived at Rose's Rescue.
Evelyn is special needs because she is deaf and has no teeth. She won't need a particular food, but she will need to be fed soft food. In addition to this, she also is a bit of a genetic mess as far as her body structure goes - she is built like a bulldog! She can manage going up steps to get outside, but going down is tougher for her. Therefore, a home with few steps is ideal, or a two-story house where she would have little reason to go upstairs may also be ok.
Despite her physical limitations, Evelyn is a joy to be around. She is friendly with everyone she meets, enjoys affection, and demands very little. She is an EASY special needs dog, and in some ways, is easier to care for than more physically capable pooches! She is perfectly housebroken and has never had an accident since her arrival. Evelyn gets along fine with other dogs as long as they aren't too rambunctious and pester her, but she doesn't really interact with them much.
She is much loved by her foster mom who has considered keeping her, but after a great deal of thought and consideration, she feels that Evelyn deserves a home where she can be queen of her own castle, without the constant chaos of foster dogs coming and going and without having to share the attention with a large pack. Evelyn would be a great pet for a quieter home - probably not so great with busy family with young children.
